CRS/HIPEC & PIPAC technique can successfully treat end stage peritoneal cancers
Jaipur, 23rd November 2021: With the recent advancements in the treatment modalities for cancer, various types of cancers even in the last stages have shown better outcomes and patient survival rates. Stage 4 cancers which until now have been considered to be untreatable or had dismal results, can now be treated with advancement in medical science and technology.
In order to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and emphasize on the advanced treatment modules available for various types of cancers, Max Hospital Saket organized a public awareness session today.
People need to be still aware that with recent advancements in oncology like robot assisted surgeries, CRS-HIPEC & PIPAC etc. cancer is completely treatable. And with diagnosis at the right and initial stages can not only triple the chances of survival, but also provide a better quality of life.
“Minimally invasive surgeries have numerous advantages for patients in comparison to traditional surgeries including minimal scars, speedy recovery, reduced pain, shorter duration of hospital stays, and lesser post-surgery complications. With the advanced surgical technologies like da Vinci robotic-assisted surgeries, we are able to perform these procedures more safely and efficiently with minimal post-operative care and faster recovery. These benefits go a long way in enabling the surgeon and care teams in providing life-enhancing care for patients. Robot surgery adoption among Indian surgeons is on the rise, primarily because of the promising results and potential for good patient outcomes. In fact, the preference for Robotic Surgery has increased after the outbreak of COVID 19 due to fewer post-surgery complications and reduced hospital stay after the surgery.” Said Dr Harit Chaturvedi, Chairman, Max Institute of Cancer Care Max Hospital, Saket, New Delhi.
Further, the recent advancements have also given rise to novel techniques such as cytoreductive surgery popularly called CRS & HIPEC and PIPAC, which are used to treat last stage peritoneal cancers as well. These procedures are used for treatment of Colon cancer, rectum cancer, cancer of ovary, cancer of appendix, pseudomyxoma peritonii, Primary Peritoneal cancers, peritoneal mesothelioma, cancer of stomach, Peritoneal sarcomatosis and other rare Peritoneal cancers. Many a times patients do not have any option of chemotherapy in recurrent setting after failing multiple lines. For these patients, HIPEC and PIPAC is the only answer offering the maximum chances of Cancer control.
“HIPEC is a major two-step surgery involving meticulous removal of all visible disease from the abdomen followed by administration of heated chemotherapy directly into the abdomen at a temperature of 42-43 degree C for 90 minutes using a specialized HIPEC machine with strict temperature control. It acts on the microscopic invisible cancer cells for better disease control. PIPAC involves administration of pressurized aerosol of chemotherapy inside the abdomen through a specialized device, CAPNOPEN. Through PIPAC, there is better cancer control with fewer side effect.” Added Dr Chaturvedi
Prominence of annual breast cancer cases in India is rising, which can also be attributed to the growing awareness. According to the recent data published in the Globacan 2020, Indian women suffering from breast cancer tops the list worldwide. But the growing awareness, timely access to medication and the changing paradigms in the field of cancer care has brought down the mortality rate gradually.
“Through this campaign we aim to spread awareness among the masses to get most breast cancers detectable at early stages, as most women with breast cancer arrive after metastasis when the tumor has spread to other body parts. At this stage, it is not completely curable but the treatment aims to achieve remission (shrinking the tumor proliferation) even through breast removal surgeries. In such times the family assurance plays a vital role for fighting against all odds.” Said Dr Bhuvan Chugh, Consultant, Medical Oncology, Max Hospital, Saket
Apart from being hereditary, breast cancer is more of a lifestyle disease now days. Stress, poor eating habits, sedentary lifestyle, and air & water pollution have been attributed to increase the incidences among young Indian females. The age group for prevalence of breast cancer has sharply come down from > 60 years to less than 40 years. Max Hospital has been pioneering for ages in the field of treatment for breast cancer.
