Max Hospital, Patparganj gives new lease of life to 52-yr-old man via laparoscopic kidney transplants

Meerut, 24th June 2022: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi gave a new lease of life to 52-year-old Vijay Pal from the city through laparoscopic kidney transplant procedure.

Vijay Pal had a history of hypertension, hypothyroidism and was suffering from an advanced stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD)  and required renal transplant urgently. However, due to several co-morbidities, he was refused transplant at various hospitals.

He then came to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj in New Delhi with lot of hopes and met Dr Varun Verma, Associate Director, Nephrology at the hospital.

Both the patient and the donor were admitted and thoroughly investigated for medical conditions and compatibility. Vijay Pal’s Wife was found to be a match for him and willingly opted to become the donor.

Pertaining to multiple medical conditions including COPD, RVH, Severe MR and chronic glomerulonephritis, the case was challenging and was refused for transplant at many hospitals.

“Considering the age of the donor, all the procedures were monitored minutely and the team decided to perform laparoscopic living-donor renal allograft transplant under general anaesthesia. After a thorough pre-transplant work up and clearance from cardiology and psychiatry after obtaining proper consent his transplant surgery was done successfully. Similarly, the wife underwent right laparoscopic donor nephrectomy under general anaesthesia with no adverse events post operatively. Post operation, the patient made a swift recovery with good urine output and rapid decline in creatinine levels and was discharged in stable condition,” explained Dr. Varun Verma, Associate Director, Nephrology, Max Hospital Patparganj, New Delhi.

In the last few years, there have been many advancements in renal replacement and organ support, namely in terms of innovation and technology. Laparoscopic Renal Transplantation has become extremely useful as it results in quicker recovery, less pain and smaller scar with quicker healing.

Unlike conventional kidney transplantation surgeries where the patient receives the kidney through a larger muscle cutting process, laparoscopic surgery is conducted with only a small incision and involves no cutting of muscle. Blood loss during surgery and scope for human error are also minimized.

The occurrence of kidney failure or chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases in the country are rapidly increasing due to various factors such as diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, genetic conditions, autoimmune diseases, drug or alcohol abuse and urinary tract infections. With kidney transplant being the only solution for such cases, it is imperative for patients and their families to understand various types of a kidney transplant surgical procedures.

“Such tech driven surgeries are currently revolutionising the way surgeries are conducted across the globe. We need to understand that donating one kidney does not affect the physical abilities, quality of life or longevity of a person. We also remove donor kidney by laparoscopic methods so that donor have minimal discomfort and excellent cosmetic results,” Dr Verma added.

The benefits of laparoscopic surgery include high precision due to use of camera instead of enlarged surgical site, smaller incisions ensuring very little scarring, and minimal blood loss, quick healing and shorter hospital stay.
