Max Hospital, Vaishali relaunches exclusive OPD for Liver diseases in Meerut

Top Consultants will visit the OPD on 2nd & 4th Friday of each month

Meerut, 25th November 2022: One of the leading healthcare providers in Delhi NCR and Western Uttar Pradesh, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, today announced the re-launch of their exclusive Liver Transplant & Biliary Science OPD Services in Meerut. Starting from today the OPD will be functional on 2ndand 4th Friday every month at Max Med Centre Meerut.

The OPD relaunch is yet another patient-centric step taken by the healthcare provider to empower patients with accessibility to quality healthcare services.

The OPD services were launched by Dr Rajesh Dey, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant & Biliary Science, Dr Tejal Bhoy, Dr Bappaditya Har from Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, who also presented a recently conducted case of Mr Rohit Kaushik, who underwent live donor liver transplant surgery.

Mr Rohit Kaushik presented to Max Hospital Vaishali with the diagnosis of Liver cirrhosis having high levels of bilirubin, Jaundice and water accumulation in the stomach (ascites) which greatly compromised with his routine day to day lifestyle and it was unlikely that he could survive beyond few months. Due to his rapidly depleting condition, the only option to save him was a liver transplantation. Unfortunately, getting someone to donate a part of their liver was indeed a hugely challenging and uphill task. Luckily his wife volunteered to be the liver donor. After complete evaluation and counselling, living donor liver transplant surgery was performed. The donor (his wife) made a swift recovery and was discharged within 10 days without requiring any mediant, and is currently fit and active. Post operatively, Mr Rohit was closely monitored for his liver graft functioning and was discharged after 3 weeks with gradual recovery and presently is on minimal medications.” Said Dr Rajesh Dey, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant & Biliary Science, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali.

This case highlights how a successful LDLT can become a boon & offer long-term survival even in end stage liver disease patients. It is important to note that there is a huge burden of liver diseases in our country, and for those who develop end-stage liver disease, the only definitive treatment is liver transplant. However, there is a huge scarcity of brain-dead organ donors in our country due to lack of awareness. In such circumstances, living related organ liver donor remains the only feasible option.

According to Indian Council of Medical Research, close to 10% of people in UP alone suffer from some form of liver disease. Liver disease may affect one in every 5 Indians. Alcohol is the most common cause of end-stage liver disease with 50% of cirrhosis related mortality being attributed directly or indirectly to alcohol. Liver disease is the tenth most common cause of death in India as per the World Health Organization. According to the latest WHO data published in 2018 Liver Disease Deaths in India reached 264,193 or 3% of total deaths. Preventive health check-ups and ultrasounds can help in early treatment of the disease.

Dr Gaurav Aggarwal, Senior VP Operations, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali said, “It is our ongoing endeavour to provide the masses access to top medical facilities. We strive to raise awareness about liver disease and its direct effect on the normal day-to-day functioning of an individual. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a distinct hepatic condition and one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease globally. Max hospital ensures that the patient receives intense care during and after the surgery. With this new OPD in Meerut we hope we can benefit a lot of people with such conditions for whom travel to other cities was an impediment in the way of their treatment.”

With the launch of the OPD services in Meerut, the unit will be able to serve more patients in the city and nearby region. The focus towards improving the techniques and technologies has made surgeries safe, cost-effective, and at par with world standards.
