Early diagnosis & treatment can easily help combat anemia

Ganganagar, 20th May 2023: Anaemia, a condition characterized by insufficient oxygen-carrying capacity in a person's red blood cells, is a significant health concern affecting individuals worldwide. In view of the same, there is a dire need to raise awareness, enhance diagnosis, and provide effective treatment for anaemia. The goal should be to make the Nation Anaemia Free by equipping our medical professionals with world-class equipment and resources to combat this condition.

Anaemia can significantly impact a person's quality of life, often causing fatigue, shortness of breath, and other debilitating symptoms that hinder everyday tasks. Understanding the causes and treatment options for anaemia is crucial to properly manage the condition and improve the quality of life for those affected.

Dr Rahul Bhargava, Principal Director & Chief, Hematology, Hemato Oncology & BMT, Fortis Hospital Gurugram, said “To combat anaemia effectively, it is essential for individuals to be aware of its signs and symptoms and seek medical help promptly if they are present. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the development of more severe medical complications. Maintaining a healthy diet that ensures the body receives adequate nutrients for the production of healthy red blood cells is also vital.”

Numerous factors can contribute to anaemia, such as nutritional deficiencies, blood loss, chronic diseases, and certain medications. Nutritional deficiencies may result from inadequate intake of iron, vitamin B12, and folate. Blood loss can occur due to menstruation, ulcers, surgery, or injury. Chronic diseases like cancer, kidney disease, or Crohn's disease can also induce anaemia. Additionally, specific medications, including certain antibiotics, have been identified as potential causes.

Dr Rahul Bhargav further added “Treatment for anaemia depends on its underlying cause. In cases of nutritional deficiency, dietary changes aimed at providing essential nutrients may be necessary. Iron supplements may also be prescribed to supplement the body's iron levels. For anaemia resulting from chronic diseases, treating the underlying condition becomes crucial. In situations of blood loss, identifying and treating the source of the bleeding is paramount.”

Anaemia is commonly caused by a deficiency in iron, an essential component of haemoglobin, the protein responsible for transporting oxygen in red blood cells. In females, haemoglobin levels should exceed 12 g/dL, while in males, levels should exceed 13 g/dL. Recognizing the symptoms of anaemia is crucial for early detection and prompt medical intervention. These symptoms may include fatigue, pale skin, dizziness, cold extremities, shortness of breath, and rapid heartbeat, ranging from mild to severe.

In India, we are fortunate to have a team of dedicated medical professionals equipped with world-class equipment and resources to provide comprehensive care for anaemia.
