Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh raises Awareness on Lung Cancer

Bahadurgarh, 30 August 2024: Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh, today, organised a public awareness session focusing on the prevalence, management, and treatment options for lung cancer. This session aimed to educate the public about one of the most prevalent and deadly forms of cancer worldwide.

Present on the occasion were Dr. Waseem Abbas, Associate Director, Medical Oncology, and Dr. Inder Mohan Chugh, Senior Director, Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine from Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh, who emphasized about the prevention and treatment options for lung cancer.

Dr Waseem Abbas is also available for OPD on Every Tuesday from 9.30 am to 12 pm at Brahm Shakti Sanjivani Hospital, Rohtak Road, Bahadurgarh.

Emphasizing about the widespread impact of lung cancer, explaining the various stages and treatment options available, Dr. Waseem Abbas, Associate Director, Medical Oncology, Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh said "Lung cancer is not only one of the most common cancers worldwide, but it also remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Lung cancer progresses through various stages, starting from early-stage (Stage 0), where cancer cells are confined to the lining of the airways, to advanced stages (Stage IV), where the cancer has spread to distant organs. In the early stages, surgery plays a crucial role, but for advanced stages, we've seen remarkable advancements in treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. These advanced options not only provide excellent results but also significantly increase life expectancy, especially in cases where surgery isn't an option."

The incidence of lung cancer can vary significantly based on geographical location, smoking rates, and exposure to environmental hazards. It is a complex condition influenced by genetic and environmental factors. To reduce the risk, it's essential to avoid smoking, limit exposure to harmful substances, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Early detection through regular health check-ups is also key in managing lung cancer risk.

Shedding light on the common symptoms, causes, and diagnostic options for lung cancer, Dr. Inder Mohan Chugh, Senior Director, Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine from Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh, highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and said” While smoking is a major cause of lung cancer, it's important to note that lung cancer can also develop in non-smokers due to factors like passive smoking, exposure to environmental hazards, radon, or a family history of lung cancer. The symptoms often mirror those of tuberculosis, such as a persistent cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, and breathlessness. So, it is highly recommended to use advance method of diagnosis to detect the cancer. Early diagnosis is critical and can be achieved through various methods like biopsy, bronchoscopy, and CT-guided biopsy. We are equipped with facilities like Bronchoscopy with Biopsy, EBUS Linear and Radial Biopsy, Thoracoscopy which can help in early detection of cancer.  The earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances for successful treatment."

Max Hospital Shalimar Bagh remains committed to raising awareness about lung cancer and providing world-class care to those affected by this condition. The session concluded with a call to action for regular health check-ups, lifestyle changes, and awareness of early symptoms to combat lung cancer effectively.
